AMHERSTBURG —
The Amherstburg Heritage Homecoming is this weekend.
The organizing
committee has moved the event from September to August and
the dates of the sixth annual Homecoming will be August
16 and 17. A number of events will take place throughout
the weekend with a major attraction being the Underground
Railroad Crossing re-enactment. That finishes near the old
Bob-Lo dock around 10 a.m. Saturday and will feature some
new twists this year to keep the event fresh.
"We hope
to cross a load of passengers much the same as in the past
years except this year there is a bounty hunter and his
assistant(s) hiding in the crowd of greeters on the shore,"
said committee member Janice Harris in a press release.
"David Morris - a professional actor from Markham,
Ontario playing the bounty hunter villain - will mingle
with the crowd of well-wishers on the shore as the boat
lands. Amongst the hugs and confusion, he will try to kidnap
one of the new female arrivals. As he begins to sneak away,
local citizens discover what is happening, they stop and
hold him and ultimately hand him over to a Fort Malden soldier
to deport him for his own safety."
Under the scenario,
the victim would then be rescued and reassured with the
movement towards the Amherstburg Heritage Homecoming parade.
The parade will occur following the re-enactment and use
mainly Sandwich St. S. and then work its way towards S.
Ralph McCurdy Track & Field Complex in Centennial Park
on Victoria St. S. where the activities for the day will
take place. Other
Saturday activities include the opening ceremonies following
the parade at the track complex. Admission to the track
is $2. There will also be barbecue dinners, children games,
live entertainment from various groups, all day vendors
and crafters and a concession stand.
Sunday's line-up
includes the open air church service with Open Door Fellowship
at 11 a.m. and an afternoon service with Pastor Paul Riley
& Congregation at 3 p.m., guest speaker Pastor James
Howard, barbecue, vendors & crafters and the concession
stand until the park closes at 6 p.m.
